
Women's Basketball Wins 2000 Kelloggs' Holiday Classic

Louisville, Ky. - University of Louisville women's basketball team defeated Austin Peay 91-68 to win the championship of the 2000 Kelloggs' Holiday Classic in Freedom Hall. Freshman sensation Sara Nord recorded the school's first triple-double in women's basketball history.
Sophomore Tiana Ford led the Cardinals with a career-high 19 points. Marju Sober added 14 points, Carol Brown had 12 points and Shanta Bowens added 10. Junior Shamika Ingram pulled down 12 rebounds. Austin Peay was led by leading scorer Brooke Armistead with 27 points.
The Cards took over the second half and applied pressure to the Lady Govs. Louisville forced the Lady Govs into 20 turnovers, 10 in each half. The Cards outrebounded Austin Peay 51-40.
The closest Austin Peay would get was 40-34 with just over 18 minutes remaining. Louisville built the lead by feeding the post. Three Louisville post players combined for 31 points. Louisville finished the game hitting 42.9 percent from the field and 73.3 percent from the free throw line.
Austin Peay scored the first nine points of the game and then Louisville scored the next 12 points to take a 12-9 lead with 12:12 remaining in the first half. Louisville kept the lead despite the rallies by Austin Peay and managed a slim 36-31 lead at the half.
Three Louisville players were named to the all tournament team. Sober and Ford were named to the all-tournament team while Nord was named the MVP. Joining them on the all-tournament team were Brooke Armistead from Austin Peay, Amy Getman from Niagara and Nykesha Thompson from Maryland Eastern Shores.
The Cards will return to action on New Years day against Cincinnati at 2:00 p.m. in Freedom Hall.
