
Women's Basketball Tops Canisius 88-69

Louisville, Ky. - University of Louisville women's basketball team came back from a nine point deficit at the half to defeat Canisius 88-69 tonight in Freedom Hall. Freshman Sara Nord scored all her career-high 28 points in the second half to lead the Cards to a Christmas victory.
Louisville opened up the second half with a 9-2 run to come within two at the 16:24 mark. Nord scored six points in that run. The Cards took the lead for good when Kara Kessans hit a three-pointer from the left side with just over 15 minutes remaining.
Canisius cut the lead to six at the 6:29 mark but could not hold off the Cardinals.
The Cards took care of the ball in the second half, committing just six turnovers in the second half. Louisville won the battle on the boards, outrebounding the Griffins 59-52.
Shanta Bowens led Louisville on the boards with a career-high 13 rebounds. Three other Cards scored in double figures, Kessans with 17, Bowens with 11 and Janelle Antoine with 10.
Canisius hit 47.1 percent from behind the three-point arc to lead the Cardinals 36-27 at the half. Eight of Canisius' 12 field goals in the first half were from the three-point arc. Sophomore guard Jill Knapic led the Golden Griffins with 12 first half points and four three-pointers.
The Golden Griffins took a 21-19 lead with under seven minutes in the first half off a three-pointer from Knapic. Canisius forced Louisville into 13 turnovers in the first half.
The Cards will return to action when the host the 2000 Kellogg's Holiday Classic, Dec. 28-29 in Freedom Hall. Louisville will host Niagara in the first round on Dec. 28 at 7:30 p.m.
