
Women Fall to Texas 73-59

Cancun, MEXICO - The University of Louisville women?s basketball team fell 73-59 to the University of Texas Saturday night in the first round of the Torneo Cancun de Basquetbol.
The Cardinals overcame a 7-0 run in the opening five minutes of the game to pull ahead 11-9 with seven minutes remaining. U of L built a six point lead over the Longhorns behind the three-point shooting of Kara Kessans and Sara Nord. Kessans went 5 of 6 from the field and 3 for 3 from the three-point line in the first half.
The Longhorns made a late charge in the first half behind reserve Annissa Hastings six first half points, cutting the Cardinal lead to one at the half.
Texas opened the second half with an 8-0 run to take the lead for good from Louisville. The hot-shooting of the Cardinals cooled in the second half, connecting on just 27.6 percent from the line. The Longhorns were able to pull away in the final 10 minutes.
Louisville center Shamika Ingram fouled our with over six minutes left and forward Carol Brown fouled out with over five minutes to play, sparking another Texas run. The Cardinals did not score a basket from the 9 minute mark until just under four minutes to play. It was in those final four minutes that Louisville made a run but it was too late.
Kessans led Louisville with a career-high 24 points and Nord added 15 points and seven assists. Hastings led Texas with 16 points.
Louisville will face Minnesota for third place on Sunday night.
